SOME OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN NORFOLK

Most people think of the Naval base when they think of Norfolk and assume it’s just another military town. But Norfolk is so much more than just the base. Over 230,000 people call this city home and fun things to do in Norfolk are just around the corner. From museums in Norfolk VA that focus on the military history of the area to a Norfolk brewery always brewing something new, there’s much to do to stay busy.

These are some of our favorite ways to spend a day in Norfolk. Whether you live here and you need a great date night or you’re visiting for a weekend and need fun things to do while you pass the time, these are top of our list.

TOUR LOCAL BREWERIES

There has been a huge shift from breweries simply being big warehouses full of equipment to being neighborhood staples. Finding a Norfolk brewery is as easy as driving down around the downtown area or Shore Drive. There are a few excellent brewery choices you need to try if you love local beer.

O’Connor Brewing Co is in the railroad district and is just a few miles from downtown. The brewery is a huge facility, over 35,000 square feet, and regularly rotates seasonal beer selections based on what is brewing. There are also food trucks there on the weekends, featuring some of the best local eateries on wheels.

Elation Brewing is in the Larchmont neighborhood and has a very relaxed, casual vibe that you can enjoy any time of the afternoon or evening. The bar is made from 400-year-old beams and the main room has huge ceilings, brick walls, and big windows to let in the light. It’s also one of the best places to eat in Norfolk, as the attached kitchen, called the Bakehouse, has some of the most loved pizzas in the area.

Finally, if you’re interested in a Norfolk brewery that has an ever-changing menu and doesn’t mind trying new things, Rip Rap Brewing is going to be your favorite new spot. It started with two former Coast Guard members who had a passion for home brewing and the brewery still runs like a big experiment. You can always expect something new, interesting, or unique here.

SPEND A DAY AT A MUSEUM

This area has a lot of history, and museums have much to offer residents and visitors. The Chrysler Museum of Art is probably the most popular in the area and has a popular permanent collection as well as spots for rotating artists. If you want to get involved, there are beginner classes and events for glassmaking.

There are also numerous museums in Norfolk, VA that focus on the rich military traditions and history of the area. The MacArthur Memorial is a research center and museum dedicated to the life and legacy of General Douglas MacArthur. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is one of just ten museums operated by the US Navy and has many historical navy uniforms, weaponry, and even ship models. Finally, you can tour the Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin, both on the water. Admission gets you into both, or you can take a guided scheduled tour to see the command room, the control rolls, the captain’s cabin, and more.

THE VIRGINIA ZOO

At the top of the list of fun things to do in Norfolk is the Virginia Zoo. This zoo is massive with more than 50 acres to explore and more than 700 animals in total to see and learn about. It opened in 1900 and still has a lot of its original charm. The zoo regularly has events, and many, if not all, are kid-friendly!

NORFOLK BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is the state’s largest botanical garden at more than 150 acres. There are 60 different gardens on site to explore and many native birds call the area home. There is also a huge butterfly house, a children’s garden with a splash pad and learning activities, craft events, and walking tours. This is one of the best things to do in Norfolk for those interested in learning about the native flora of the area.

EXPLORE THE FOOD SCENE

Norfolk has a growing food scene, thanks in part to the many different cultures that are represented at the Naval Station. There are plenty of places to eat in Norfolk no matter what you’re craving.

Varia is one of the best-reviewed restaurants with a menu heavily inspired by Italy. Not only does it have incredible pizza and pasta, but the wine list is also one of the most loved in the area. If you’re looking for something more casual, Grain is a great option. The restaurant has the only rooftop beer garden in all of Norfolk and their food selection is a mix of bar favorites like wings and loaded fries, along with chef-driven entrees, like a tuna poke bowl, gumbo, or street tacos.

If you want a great date night or special occasion restaurant, Glass Light Restaurant in downtown should be where you make a reservation. The menu is French focused with a heavy dose of sustainability and fresh seasonal produce, and the bar gives the same attention to detail. If you really want an unforgettable experience, sit at the chef’s counter and watch the magic happen.
