West of Virginia Beach and South of the Chesapeake Bay is Norfolk, home to the world's largest naval base and greatest fleet of American vessels. It’s easily accessible from Norfolk International Airport (ORF), the light rail or trolley lines connecting the various resort towns, or the expressway. Since Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest military base, there are plenty of seaside attractions, beachfront properties, well-manicured parks, and gourmet eating options downtown or in Ghent. It's also home to a strong arts community, Old Dominion University, and a place where residents can embark on cruises or those on cruises can disembark to explore historic Norfolk.

People in Norfolk recently discovered more recreation options after the city completed a massive downtown revitalization project. The project involved opening more entertainment places, centers for opera and symphony music, and performing arts theaters. Granby and Ghent are two areas in town that have many bars and restaurants to pick from and enjoy. Additionally, the cruise port terminal has drawn more business to town and is another colorful sector of the city that offers enjoyable, vibrant eating and shopping choices.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is impressive and home to an amazing 450 varieties of roses. Likewise, the Hermitage Museum and Gardens is a colonial home turned fine arts museum that offers residents painting classes. The Virginia Zoo has 400 animals over 50 acres of exhibits, making it an outstanding day trip. Lastly, for those who relish maritime history, The Norfolk Naval Station offers a two-hour cruise tour conducted by cadets that details the base and U.S. vessels. Whether it's enjoying the beaches and downtown districts or hearing about Norfolk's history, there are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and adventure.
